This new form of mineral exploitation – which would likely become the largest mining operation in history – would significantly disturb the delicate environment of the deep sea, with devastating consequences for our ocean, wildlife and the people who depend on both. Yet deep-sea mining could start as soon as July 2023. We all depend on it the deep sea underpins all ocean ecosystems and plays an important part in the global carbon cycle. It covers 65% of the Earth's surface and makes up more than 95% of the Earth’s biosphere, with a staggering diversity of life on a par with that of tropical rainforests. The deep sea is still a pristine ecosystem, largely untouched by human activity. ![]()
